our herd

We have of Quarter Horses, Quarter Horse cross Boerperds, Basotho Horses and Thoroughbred-Crosses in our herd. The Boerperd is a true South African horse breed; its history and development closely linked with that of its homeland, known for their temperament and ability to thrive in tough conditions. Our horses are selected for their hardiness and responsiveness. The horses run as a herd in the Simalaha Conservancy and are brought in for grooming, feeding and rides.

Living remotely has required a firm ability in animal husbandry and horse care. Most of our horses arrive ‘green’ and are gentled by Doug personally. Once Doug is confident that they are schooled well enough, they are ridden on the plains by our horse wranglers Mukela and Thomas where they are slowly introduced to the bush and wildlife. All our horses are forward going, steady and have gentle natures.

We support the 3 F’s of equine welfare - freedom, friends and forage! Our “home stables” are at Chundukwa River Lodge, where our herd return after each season in the Simalaha. Here they meet with the farrier, dentist and receive ongoing fitness and schooling by Doug and the team.

Murray is the Master Farrier who takes care of all our horses’ hooves. He also happens to be Doug’s son! We are grateful for Murrays’ ongoing support and extra hands when required during our horseback safaris. We’re a family-run operation and family is at the heart of our story in Africa. We are fortunate to spend our days working together, surrounded by a team of individuals who share our vision.
